1984
by George Orwell, Erich Fromm
"Written in 1948, 1984
was George Orwell's chilling prophecy about the future. And while 1984
has come and gone, Orwell's narrative is timelier than ever. 1984
presents a startling and haunting vision of the world, so powerful that
it is completely convincing from start to finish. No one can deny the
power of this novel, its hold on the imaginations of multiple
generations of readers, or the resiliency of its admonitions a legacy
that seems only to grow with the passage of time.
Hidden away in the
Record Department of the sprawling Ministry of Truth, Winston Smith
skilfully rewrites the past to suit the needs of the Party. Yet he
inwardly rebels against the totalitarian world he lives in, which
demands absolute obedience and controls him through the all-seeing
telescreens and the watchful eye of Big Brother, symbolic head of the
Party. In his longing for truth and liberty, Smith begins a secret love
affair with a fellow-worker Julia, but soon discovers the true price of
freedom is betrayal."
This is a friend's recommendation and by the rating from Goodreads (4.04 in 5) it seems to be a great book. It's now on my "to read" list :)
Ich kenne Buch und Film und mir gefällt die Story, war seiner Zeit schon weit voraus...

ReplyDeleteDimi..
It was a good book but I don't see Orwell's world coming true. Read Brave New World instead and I think you'll find it to be more accurate.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip :)
DeleteI read 1984 in high school. It made a strong impression on me.
ReplyDeleteI agree with DWei's comment.
Brave New World seems closer to what is happening today. People are controlled psychologically with meaningless pleasures. As an example, why would anyone wait in line overnight to buy a phone? Is there nothing more important they can spend their time on?
